This Piston Kit was used in Cummins CPLs: 1280
Piston Information: Cummins 855 Engines were assembled using one of four different types of pistons. Not all engines can use these four pistons, as special cooling systems are needed. If you are unsure of which piston you may have in your engine, or which pistons you can upgrade to, please give us a call and we'd be happy to assist.
- Premium, Single-Ni Piston. This this a 4-ring piston that has a single Nickel Insert (Ni) embedded in the top-most piston ring groove only. The piston rings included will have a Chrome-faced top ring only.
- Premium Plus, Single-Ni Piston. This is a 4-ring piston that also has a single Nickel Insert (Ni) embedded in the top-most piston ring groove only. The piston rings included will have a Chrome facing on both, the top and second ring.
- Dual-Ni Piston. This is a 4-ring piston that has Nickel Inserts (Ni) embedded in both, the top and also second piston ring groove. The piston rings included will have a Chrome facing on both, the top and second ring. Please note: Dual-Ni pistons can only be used in engines that are piston cooled AND aftercooled.
- Tri-Tech, Dual-Ni Piston. These Pistons have Nickel Inserts (Ni) embedded in both, the top and also second piston ring groove. The main difference is that they only use only 3 rings instead of 4. The top ring is cut at 15 degrees, instead of 20 like all other 855 pistons. This design is said to improve durability and reduce oil consumption. All three rings used (Two compression and one oil) used with this piston will feature a Chrome facing. Tri-Tech pistons were designed specifically to be used in high speed, high load engines, especially those that heavily utilize compression brakes.
Cylinder Liner Information - There are two basic sized cylinder liners that were used directly from the factory in 855 engines. If you are unsure whether your engine has Standard or .020 / .040 liners, there will usually be a part number inscribed on the flange on the liner. Look for your part number in the list below.
