Product Details & Specifications
IPD's popular Caterpillar 3406C "Enhanced Durability" upgrade kit. This kit converts your engine from a single piece, big pin, aluminum piston to a reduced compression two-piece industrial piston with steel crown. The replacement piston will use the same wrist pin diameter as your original pistons, meaning you do not have to replace the connecting rods. This engine kit has been successfully installed by some of the nation's most experienced heavy duty engine builders for years. The lower 14.6:1 Compression Ratio Piston will allow your engine to run cooler and operate with favorable fuel mileage.
Please note: Fits 3406C engines with Big (2.165" diameter) Wrist Pins and Wide (1.93") Rod Bearings only. Primarily engines with Serial Prefix 4CK, 3ZJ, 8PN, and 2EK. Please ensure that your engine components before ordering in order to avoid issues.
Kit is packed with Articulated Piston number 1258869. This is a 14.6 CR Piston with Shallow Bowl Crown. It was originally designed for use in 600 HP Industrial applications directly from the factory. For maximum engine life, this piston should not be used in engines built to more than 600 HP. Beyond this range, the aluminum piston skirt may suffer from too high a cylinder temperature or pressure.
Why install this kit?
The advantage of upgrading to the two-piece articulated piston is that the steel crown piston is more able to handle increased heat exposure and cylinder pressure without cracking. This results in longer engine life span and also provides a solid foundation for those looking to increase their engine's horsepower.
What other upgrades do I need to perform in order to correctly install this engine rebuild kit?
1. Upgrade Piston Cooling Nozzles. You will need to convert your single tube piston cooling nozzles to dual tube piston nozzles. The hold-down bolts will need to be changed as well. There are 2 different sizes of cooling jets and bolts:
a. If your engine uses a 3/8"-16 bolt (Cat number 4N9916, 7C2478, 1118606 or 7E6479) on your original piston cooling nozzle (Cat number 4N9881, 2906568, 7W4990 or 7E7496), you will need to upgrade to cooling jet 1663650 and ensure that you are use bolt # 1118606 or 7C2478.
b. If your engine uses a 7/16"-14 bolt on your original piston cooling nozzle, you will need to upgrade to cooling jet 2773076 and ensure that you use bolt # 1515925.
2. Increase Oil Pump Pressure. You will need to increase the pressure of your oil pump in order to compensate for the loss of pressure caused by switching to a dual-piston cooling nozzle setup. This can be achieved in one of two ways. Both are effective, one option is much cheaper than the other:
a. Simply Replace the Oil Pressure Relief Valve Spring Retainer with a shorter version that will result in a higher pump pressure. The original (70 psi) spring retainer part number 9Y1800 can be replaced with a shorter retainer, number 9Y1792. This shorter retainer is said to provide an additional ~8 psi, which will provide a sufficient pressure increase.
b. Upgrade your entire Oil Pump.
If you have oil pump number 0R9448, 4N0733, 1614111, 4N0513 or 2369918, you will replace it with pump number 0R9449 (Same as 1614113).
If you have oil pump number 0R9697 or 1614112, you will need to replace it with pump number 10R0428 (Same as 1981508).
3. Advance Injection Pump Timing an additional 6 degrees. By default, the 3406C injection pump cam is advanced 11 degrees. Advancing it an additional 6 static degrees has proven to eliminate any engine smoke upon startup due to the piston's lower compression ratio. This will result in a total of 17 degrees of Injection Pump Timing.
You can accomplish this task by pinning both, the Flywheel and Pump Cam, then removing the pin from the Flywheel and rotating it roughly 3/4 of an inch away, which advances the pump cam another 6 degrees approximately.
Additional Upgrades: These upgrades are not absolutely required, but we have had customers state that by upgrading injectors and their turbocharger, they were able to maximize the power with their enhanced pistons. New injector number 7W7031 (or Reman number 0R8785) is a very popular upgrade, as well as a 78mm Borg Warner Turbocharger. (Turbo part number unavailable)
Since this kit was designed primarily for high horsepower applications and requires additional modifications (Listed above) in order to ensure proper installation of parts, there is no warranty offered.
